Red or White?

Can't believe that people have been arguing
over the colour of the poppy
Red for tradition, but maybe war and blood
White for peace.

I say stick with red
That's the colour that grew
in Flanders fields
But this picture with both is quite nice
But I reckon someone has fiddled
with some digital software.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Comments:
this is a complete red herring (no pun intended) and makes me really cross. the point is that the poppy is a symbol of rememberance of the dead in recent wars. The colour is largely irrelevant. It's just an attempt to detract from the real issue.

... and the poem always gets to me.

The poppies in John Macrae's field were probably red. The poem which was a gut reaction to what he saw after the terrible battle at Ypres in 1915.

The important thing is to remember.

My own preference is for red poppies - as you say that was the flanders colour. It's a cliche I know, but it is, of course, a vivid reminder of blood shed.

Anyway it does seem a bit of a pseudo issue! Makes me wonder if there are professional trolls out there who by some obscure means profit by stirrimg things up!
